Muziek

For Lies i Sire

There’s maybe a dozen bands whose work I’ll buy no matter what. One of those bands is My Dying Bride. I just ordered their new release Welcome to For Lies i Sire. Can’t wait for it to arrive!

In a recent interview with Beyond The Dark Horizon, My Dying Bride vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe stated, “Naturally, we think it’s our best work to date and has a sort of ‘new-meets-old’ sound; the violins giving a nod to our past and the new riffs and vocals showing the way forward. It is quite possibly the most depressing thing we’ve created to date, and all the more wonderful for it.”

Asked how he feels the new CD differs from My Dying Bride’s last studio album, “A Line of Deathless Kings”, Aaron replied, “Would you believe it, it’s even darker? I’ve pushed the vocals further, finding more melodies, as have the guitars, and, of course, the violin has added a deep range of feeling. It’s quite a fresh, melodic sound despite being utterly despondent.”

Tickets

The band

Just got tickets for the My Dying Bride show in Paradiso on April 20th. The tour is for their recently released ninth album, A Line of Deathless Kings. I’ve seen them twice before, at the Graspop festival in 2000 and opening for Iron Maiden in 1995. So this will be the first time they’ll actually be headlining. And in Paradiso. What a treat!

No much else going on today. Enjoying reading the A Song of Ice & Fire series. I’m trying to stop myself from finishing part 3, A Storm of Swords. After that, only part 4, A Feast for Crows, remains. Apparently the series is to end with 7 books, but the last three are unfortunately yet to be released.

Fieldtrip!

Earlier today we went to the Pasar Malam which is held nearby this weekend. We were hoping to catch the demo of Pencak Silat, but that didn’t start till much later. Bought some Spekkoek, which our nextdoor neighbour used to make when I was little, but haven’t had since. Still as delicious as I remembered though! And I bought some Incense which was relatively cheap. Plus you can never have too much of the stuff anyway..

Afterwards we went into town. Browsed the recordstore, where, to my surprise, I found and subsequently bought the new My Dying Bride, called A Line of Deathless Kings. Tjerk bought Akira Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai on DVD. Then we went to the bookstore where I was tempted by The Power of Art by Simon Schama. The book accompanies the series by the same name, of which I watched the first part on BBC 2 only last night, which was about painter Caravaggio. Episodes on Dutch painters Rembrandt and Van Gogh follow later on in the series. Recommended.
