Gisteravond de serie Station Eleven uitgezien, het boek las ik ergens halverwege 2019. In de nabije toekomst breekt er een desastreuze epidemie uit: wie de Georgische Griep oploopt bezwijkt daaraan binnen 48 uur zonder enige kans op genezing. Toen ik het boek las wist ik uiteraard niet dat we nog geen half jaar later zelf in een vergelijkbare situatie zouden komen te zitten.

Nou ja, ietwat. Zo heftig als het er hier aan toe gaat, werd het bij ons niet. Gelukkig niet. Maar het weergegeven zien in de serie was wel confronterend, vooral in de eerste aflevering, hoe anders het had kunnen aflopen als Corona een vergelijkbaar patroon had gevolgd. En toch vond ik de serie erg hoopvol. Ondanks alle ellende in het begin. Misschien dat ik over een paar jaar het boek nog eens lees, om zo ook nog even terug te kijken op die rare jaren waarin we leefden met Corona. Hopelijk.

And in contrast to most stories set in post-apocalyptic or dystopian futures, Station Eleven actually deemphasized color in scenes set before everybody died. Sprenger said that arose naturally from the design choices made for the post-apocalyptic scenes.
