Wat een verwennerij gisteren, twee optredens op een dag. In de middag eerst de Nieuwjaarsvoorstelling van Nora bij de Vlietlijn. Hoewel ze door de vakantie niet meer had kunnen oefenen, deed ze toch goed haar best. Ik vrees echter dat wij als familie ietwat bevooroordeeld, ongeacht de acties op het podium, toch wel hard hadden geklapt.
's Avonds was het tijd voor Long Distance Calling. Het Kasteel was bij lange na niet uitverkocht, maar de heren zetten toch een bijzonder strak optreden neer. Hopen dat er bij een volgend optreden iets meer mensen in het bezit van een kaartje zijn. Het is ze gegund.
Dat kon ik natuurlijk niet missen, een optreden van Monster Magnet in onze eigen Leidse Hout en nog gratis ook! Dat alles ter ere van 30 jaar Werfpop. Best relaxed eigenlijk, op de fiets naar een festival.
Werd er wel een beetje nostalgisch van, volgend jaar maar eens kijken of ik weer eens een festival mee kan pakken. Graspop misschien, zoals vroeger, of Wacken, waar ik ooit nog wel eens heen wil. Lekker een paar dagen met gelijkgestemden over een uitgedroogd en/of natgeregend grasveld heen en weer sjokken tussen marquee en mainstage.
Eindelijk, na 11 jaar komt er weer een nieuw Primus album uit! En daar hoort natuurlijk een tour bij. Na flinke teleurstelling bij het niet kunnen kopen van kaartjes voor het optreden in Paradiso, later gelukkig alsnog kaartjes voor Eindhoven weten te bemachtigen. Gisteravond was het dan zover. Vroeg in de zondagavond naar een behoorlijk uitverkochte Effenaar gereden.
Eenmaal binnen was voorprogramma Hot Head Show net van start te zijn gegaan. Een nette plek gevonden, mooi in het midden van de zaal. Het voorprogramma bleek een matige kopie van de hoofdact, maar het half uur was nog uit te houden. Omstreeks kwart over 9 waren ze er dan: basfenomeen Les Claypool, Larry ‘Ler’ LaLonde en originele drummer Jay Lane. Op het podium twee enorme astronauten, waarbij op het vizier van de helmen gedurende het concert allerlei beelden werden getoond. Een drietal nummers van het nieuwe album worden afgewisseld met klassiekers als 'Jerry was a Racecar Driver', 'Mr. Knowitall' en 'Tommy the Cat'. Nog een leuk uitstapje met Pink Floyd cover 'In the Flesh'. Toegift vanavond is 'Frizzle Fry'. Heerlijk! Doen we na release van het album in september nog een tour?
Dan geniet ik nu nog even na met een opname van Tommy The Cat. Say Baby!
We zijn er nog! Toch geen Einde der Tijden. Phew! Dan kan ik mooi de foto's van Riverside even op Flickr plaatsen. Gisteravond namelijk naar hun 10th Anniversary Tour in de Boerderij (Zoetermeer) geweest. Het optreden was volledig uitverkocht. Gelukkig waren we ruim op tijd en wisten dus een fijn plekje vooraan op het balkom te bemachtigen.
Eerst voorprogramma Tides From Nebula. Ik mag graag post-rock draaien, maar live is het altijd een beetje tricky, vooral als je de nummers niet echt kent, het lijkt dan al snel een erg lang nummer. Gelukkig liet Riverside daarna zien hoe het wel moet. Dit was de 5e keer dat ik de jongens live aan het werk zag, ditmaal met een gevarieerde setlist met tracks van al hun albums en zelfs 2 nieuwe nummers. Zoals gebruikelijk met als 2e toegift The Curtain Falls, waarbij ze 1 voor 1 het podium verlaten. Kippenvel!
In juni staan nog 2 optredens in de planning en dan is het voorlopig even leeg in de concertagenda. Had ook nog wel naar Down in Effenaar gewild of Primordial in 013, maar het kan niet elk weekend feest zijn.
De zomerhitte getrotseerd en de trein naar Zaandam gepakt. In een volgepakt De Kade, waar het zelfs nog een stuk warmer dan buiten was, speelde Katatonia gisteravond onder de noemer Last Fair Day Gone Night de enige show in de Benelux van deze bijzondere tour ter ere van hun 20-jarig jubileum. Hoewel absoluut de moeite waard, denk ik wel dat dit de laatste keer is dat ik twee concertavonden achter elkaar doe. Mijn arme, arme voetjes.
Gister afgereisd naar het verre Goes voor het optreden van Monkey3 in 't Beest. Heb me, met het oog op de reistijd, nog flink moeten haasten. Achteraf bleek dat echter niet echt nodig, we waren ruim op tijd, vooral aangezien een en ander later van start ging dan we dachten en er ook nog een voorprogramma was. Al met al begon Monkey3 zelf pas even na half 11.
Nou ja, dat gaf ons de kans nog even wat te drinken en historisch Goes te bekijken. Het bleek niet erg druk in 't Beest, er schijnen zo'n 350 mensen in te kunnen, maar er was nog geen derde aanwezig. Erg jammer, want het is wel een bijzonder strakke liveband! Ik heb me iig prima vermaakt met bijna anderhalf uur muziek, check bijv 1 van mijn favoriete nummers: Je Et Bikkje.
Mag het alleen volgende keer in de Randstad?
Voor dit weekend staat een kleine tour van onze prachtige kustprovincies in de planning. Had al ruime tijd Katatonia in de agenda staan voor zaterdag a.s. in Zaandam. Best een aardige onderneming nog, met het ov. Maar goed. Ze spelen een set van 2 uur, het eerste uur integraal het album Last Fair Deal Gone Down, dat is dit jaar namelijk 10 jaar oud en daarna nog een uur een selectie uit de rest van het oeuvre.
Ietwat last minute verder besloten toch ook maar naar Monkey3 te gaan, die spelen vrijdag in Goes. Het was me al langer bekend dat deze datum in de planning stond, maar het leek me niet praktisch en te vermoeiend (damn, ik word oud!). Maar de herinnering aan het geweldige optreden in W2 vorig jaar ligt nog te vers in het geheugen en heb dus zojuist kaartjes gereserveerd.
Net terug van het Kyuss Lives! concert in Paradiso. Bij wijze van voorprogramma de mij onbekende Burden en Waxy. Burden volledig gemist, doordat de NS moeite had met het verwijderen van een kapotte trein en wij dus gedurende een half uur extra reistijd op diverse plekken voor Amsterdam stil stonden. Tijdens het optreden van Waxy Paradiso bereikt en zelfs nog een plek vooraan op het balkon bemachtigd.
Het was even lastig, maar ik heb zojuist tickets gekocht voor Danzig! Hij speelt in juni in de Effenaar. Lastig omdat ticketmaster.nl een hartaanval had gehad. Volgens mij ging er simultaan iets heel populairs in de voorverkoop, en kennelijk hebben ze die servers nog steeds niet kek in een cluster staan daar. Maar goed, het doet er niet meer toe, ik heb tickets!
Te vaag, Monster Magnet staat dit jaar op jubilerend Werfpop. Wat heeft dat aan subsidies gekost? Misschien dit jaar toch eens een bezoekje brengen dit festival in eigen stad!
Wat me bij Paradiso niet gelukt is, lukt in de Effenaar alsnog: kaartjes voor Primus!
Ze blijken aldaar een tweede show te spelen, op zondag 19 juni. Hoewel de voorverkoop gisterochtend begonnen is, en ik het zojuist pas las, kon ik toch bestellen. Joechei! En dan ga ik nu heel hard 'Too Many Puppies' draaien.
Ah, balen! Zag eerder deze week dat Primus in juni in Paradiso speelt. Heb ze eerder eens op Graspop gezien, en dat was briljant. Dus snel genoteerd dat ik hier kaartjes voor zou gaan regelen. Nou zie ik net dat de voorverkoop niet, zoals gebruikelijk, op zaterdag begint, maar vanochtend al was begonnen. Inmiddels compleet uitverkocht dus. Op Marktplaats worden ze al door diverse schimmige lui aangeboden voor 80 euro. Snik!
Update: ik lees net op Last.fm dat het binnen een half uur was uitverkocht. Tja, toen zat ik bespreking. Ben niet de enige die achter het net heeft gevist, aan de comments te zien. Kansloos.
Tijdens de eerste set zal de band het volledige album “Last Fair Deal Gone Down” spelen uit 2001, waarmee de band zichzelf definitief op de muzikale kaart heeft gezet. De tweede set zal bestaan uit zorgvuldig geselecteerde nummers uit hun gehele repertoire. De totale show zal in totaal twee uur aan live muziek bevatten.
En dat voor 15 euro! Nu eens kijken hoe het OV richting Zaandam is.
Na Amorphis kreeg ik een foldertje met een aankondiging van het Paradise Lost concert op 29 maart. Had ik graag heen gegaan, maar ik ga dan al naar Kyuss.
Wel een beetje zuur om nu op Blabbermouth te lezen dat ze mijn favoriete album van hun, 'Draconian Times', integraal zullen spelen die avond. Ach, nou ja, ik heb ze al gezien, en ze komen vast nog wel een keer.
Ben trouwens erg blij dat ik kaartjes voor Kyuss heb weten te krijgen, want ik las later dat het die eerste dag al uitverkocht was en er veel mensen problemen hadden met Ticketservice. Wel een beetje dom dat ik niet meteen meer kaartjes heb besteld, ze gaan nu al voor aardige bedragen op Marktplaats, zag ik.
Ik geloof dat het universum niet wil dat ik Ghost Brigade live ga zien. Waar het eerder bij Paradise Lost niet lukte hun optreden als voorprogramma mee te pikken, was dat het optreden van gisteravond weer het geval! Door de gladde rails (?) deed de trein van er gisteravond iets meer dan een uur over om in Utrecht te komen. Bij aankomst in Tivoli De Helling was hun optreden net afgelopen. Nou ja, misschien volgende keer? Na een omleiding langs toilet en t-shirt stand, een mooie plek rechtsvoor bij het podium bemachtigd.
Tickets voor Kyuss zijn binnen! Hoera! Althans, Kyuss, ze touren onder de noemer Kyuss Lives! met oorspronkelijke leden John Garcia, Nick Oliveri & Brant Bjork. Als gitarist is wederom Bruno Fevery aangetrokken. Hopelijk spelen ze nu wel Demon Cleaner, want die heb ik vorige keer gemist.
Op onder andere Blabbermouth roept men uiteraard om het hardst dat het allemaal om het geld gaat en zonder Josh Homme nooit iets zal worden en dat QotSA veel beter is. Ach, wat doet het er toe, als er maar goeie muziek wordt gespeeld!
Wel schandalig trouwens wat je allemaal aan extra kosten moet betalen. Nu zit er ook al een fee van €2.21 voor betalingsverkeer bij. Dat doet me dan weer denken aan een artikel wat ik vorige week bij Wired las, over het monopolie van Ticketmaster, wat hier gelukkig nog niet zo extreem is als in de VS.
Meestal zijn de leukste concerten tegen het eind van het jaar. Dit jaar valt het echter wel mee, heb momenteel alleen Amorphis (volgende week!) in de planning staan. Zie gelukkig al wel veel leuke concerten voor begin volgend jaar aangekondigd. Ik wil in ieder geval naar Kyuss Lives, drie kwart van de oorspronkelijke bezetting, in maart in Paradiso. Een aantal jaar terug al gezien, maar zeker leuk om nogmaals te zien, The Sisters of Mercy in februari in 013. Wil Masters Of Reality al een tijdje live zien, zij komen in februari met The Cult mee als Special Guest in Paradiso in februari. Weet nog niet of dat de moeite waard zal zijn, of dat ik beter kan wachten tot ze ergens als hoofdact staan. En heel wat anders, maar misschien ook wel leuk is An Evening With CAKE in maart ook in Paradiso. We gaan zien een en ander het uitpakt.
Gisteravond naar Sivert Høyem geweest. We waren behoorlijk vroeg, dus een goeie plek gevonden. Bijna verdrongen door twee zeer onbeleefde typjes tijdens het matige voorprogramma, maar met wat ellebogenwerk een mooie plek op de tweede rij teruggeclaimd voor het hoofdprogramma.
Dit is de tweede (of vierde, als je Madrugada meetelt) keer dat ik em live zie en hij blijft gewoon goed! Hij had dezelfde mensen meegenomen als vorige keer en met veel plezier speelden ze een gevarieerde setlist met nummers van zijn solo albums, een nieuw nummer, een cover en zelfs wat Madrugada (Majesty!).
Net terug van het Drive Like Maria optreden in Paard van Troje in Den Haag. Ze speelden in de kleine zaal, wij hadden een mooie plek op het balkon. Het voorprogramma was de mij onbekende The Wrong Jeremies. Ik heb slechtere voorprograma's gehad, maar zeker ook betere. Wel erg leuk dat ze eindigden met Raining Blood, hoewel dat niet zo besteed was aan dit publiek geloof ik.
Om half 10 volgde Drive Like Maria, aanvankelijk als trio, na een drumstelwisseltruc met z'n vieren. Erg enthousiast gespeeld vanavond, het drumstel viel om, snaren braken. Strak gespeeld, en ik kijk uit naar de volgende CD!
Na een korte omleiding in de verkeerde rij (Rabozaal ipv The Max, we vonden het al zo verdacht veel mensen!), waren we gelukkig toch nog op tijd binnen om een plekje om het balkon te regelen.
Een uitverkochte Melkweg vanavond, allemaal voor Garcia plays Kyuss. Meestal ben ik niet zo'n fan van dergelijke reünie concerten, maar het optreden van Hermano van 2 jaar terug is goed bevallen, en ik heb altijd dat geweldige Kyuss oeuvre al eens live willen horen. Bovendien kreeg ik bij de interviews met zanger John Garcia wel een positief gevoel.
Paar filmpjes op Youtube bekeken van het Garcia plays Kyuss optreden op Roadburn van vorige week. Heb nu extra veel zin in het Melkweg concert eind mei waarvoor de kaartjes al klaar liggen, bij mijn oordopjes.
Ben woensdagavond naar het concert van Sivert Høyem geweest. Hij speelde in een (overigens zeer warme) kleine zaal van de Melkweg in Amsterdam.
Ik ben gelukkig in de gelegenheid geweest om Madrugada 2x live aan het werk te hebben gezien, voor zij ermee stopten, en was dan ook aangenaam verrast toen Sivert ook onder eigen naam nog enkele nummers uit het oeuvre van, zoals hij zelf zei, 'that band I once was in' voor ons speelde. Waaronder een prachtige akoestische versie van Majesty, waarvan ik een stukje gefilmd heb. Het solo-werk kwam uiteraard ook ruimschoots aan bod, incl de single Moonlanding. Al met al een erg leuke avond, waarbij de band tot 2x toe terugkeerde op het podium!
Ik heb kaartjes voor Amorphis in Tivoli De Helling (Utrecht) in november. Dit is het vervolg van hun Forging Europe tour, vorige keer speelden ze in Leeuwarden en dat was toch me nét te ver weg. Maar Utrecht is gelukkig goed te doen en ik ben erbij. Hoera!
Goed nieuws, ik heb kaartjes voor Garcia plays Kyuss (in mei in de Melkweg)! Heb die geniale nummers altijd al eens live willen horen, had de vrees dat dat er niet meer in zat.
Gister naar de 'New Night Over Europe' Tour van Katatonia geweest in P60 in Amstelveen. Zij hadden Swallow the Sun en Long Distance Calling meegebracht.
Expres op tijd gearriveerd om ook het optreden van Long Distance Calling te zien. Mooi plekje op het balkon bemachtigd. Vorige keer (in W2) was vrij chaotisch, maar - hoewel korter- wisten ze nu een strakke show neer te zetten. Ik heb zelfs een kek shirt gekocht, zwart met grijze opdruk, altijd een goede combo.
Long Distance Calling staat in het voorprogramma van Katatonia bij de aankomende tournee. Waar ik al kaartjes voor heb. Ik had er al zin in, maar nu helemaal. Hopelijk kan Jonas dan meedoen bij het nummer The Nearing Grave, net als op de CD!
Zojuist kaartjes besteld voor het optreden van Sivert Høyem in de Melkweg komende april. Ben benieuwd hoe het zonder de rest van Madrugada zal gaan. Hierbij alvast de nieuwe single 'Moonlanding'.
Broer en ik zijn ongeveer groot-gebracht op Yes. Jaarlijks vier weken met de auto door Frankrijk scheuren met, voor mijn gevoel althans, non-stop Yes van cassette, en de maanden daartussen van plaat. Haha!
Extra leuk dus om ze weer eens in het echt te zien, ditmaal in De Waerdse tempel in Heerhugowaard. Leuke zaal, alleen niet erg praktisch qua parkeren. Vooraf was er nogal wat verwarring over de line-up, terwijl op de officiële site toch duidelijk te lezen stond: Yes is now touring Europe, Steve, Chris, and Alan are joined by Benoit David on vocals and Oliver Wakeman on keyboards. Erg slim, je zanger-met-problemen aan de kant schuiven voor iemand uit een coverband met een beangstigend vergelijkbare stem. Dan kun je nog jaren vooruit!
Gisteravond naar het Paradise Lost concert in Tivoli geweest. Helaas net te laat voor voorprogramma Ghost Brigade, die had ik wel graag willen zien. Maar onverwachts was het zeer matige Engel op de tweede plek gekomen, dus dat optreden heb ik helaas wel meegekregen.
En dan te denken dat in Engeland Katatonia het voorprogramma was. Zucht. Het zit ook niet mee de laatste paar concerten. Nou ja, we komen voor de hoofdact, dus het doet er ook allemaal niet zo toe. En die was weer goed bezig deze dinsdagavond. Een fijne mix van tracks van het nieuwe album en fijne ouwetjes (waaronder van mijn favoriete album, Draconian Times), en zelfs klassieker As I Die werd gespeeld.
Het blijft een onzin-term, maar ik draai de laatste paar maanden erg veel Post-rock. Denk aan bands als 35007, Monkey3, Explosions in the Sky, Long Distance Calling, God is an Astronaut, This Will Destroy You.
Simply put, it is the use of ‘rock instrumentation’ for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre’s style typically produce instrumental music.
Dus ik was erg blij om te horen dat Long Distance Calling en Monkey3 kwamen optreden. Op zondag en overdag nog wel! Voor het luttele bedrag van 9 euro. Het shirt was met 12 euro nog duurder. Als 3e act was de Nederlandse Atlantis meegenomen, dus al met al een zeer geslaagde instrumentale middag. En lang leve de oordopjes, voelde mijn broekspijpen af en toe trillen.
Net terug uit Haarlem, was naar het concert van Riverside geweest. Stonden erg mooi vooraan op het balkon, het voordeel van vroeg zijn. Nadeel daarvan is echter dat je het voorprogramma in zijn geheel meemaakt en dat was hier niet echt nodig geweest. Wat een saaie bedoening. Nou ja, gelukkig maakte Riverside veel goed. Heb ze nu een paar keer aan het werk gezien, maar ze spelen elke keer bere-strak!
Ben nu toch min of meer klaarwakker, dus ik heb gelijk maar even kaartjes besteld voor Long Distance Calling & Monkey 3 die zondagmiddag (!) in W2 in Den Bosch spelen. Te mooi om te laten schieten.
Morgen naar Porcupine Tree! Ben alvast wat setlists van deze tour aan het bekijken. Zeer benieuwd wat ze, naast het nieuwe album in z'n geheel, nog meer gaan spelen.
Was overgehaald mee te gaan naar een optreden van Omnia. Gisteravond was het zover, in de schouwburg van Maarssen. Wel vreemd om te zitten bij een concert. Helaas was ik er niet meer echt aan toegekomen om de CDs te draaien (er kwam ook zoveel nieuws uit de laatste tijd!), maar daar heb ik door het enthousiaste spel gelukkig verder geen last van gehad. Erg leuk om een keertje mee te maken in het echt! Al was het alleen al vanwege de indrukwekkende variatie aan instrumenten (waaronder een uitschuifbare didgeridoo). Enkele foto's uiteraard op Flickr.
Lees net dat Ghost Brigade in November het voorprogramma is Paradise Lost. Erg stoer, want die wilde ik al een tijdje graag live zien! Jammer alleen dat het in Engeland Katatonia is. Die ik dus weer -net als bij Porcupine Tree- niet als bonus te zien krijg. Ik hoop wel dat ze in december of januari hier spelen!
What a difference a venue makes. From small Melkweg on Wednesday, to big (too big for my liking) Ahoy last night. But it was worth it, so get to see Pearl Jam. The show had sold out within minutes, so I was very happy to get the tickets, even though the seats were quite a way up on the tribune.
Just found out the secret Special Guest for the Porcupine Tree show later this year will be Robert Fripp, of King Crimson fame. Which I'm sure is quite alright. Unfortunately the news is somewhat eclipsed by the the fact that the role will be performed by Katatonia in several other countries. I'd love to see them live again, so that would have been my choice of openers. Shame. Well, maybe they'll make it here on their own around the same time. Fingers crossed.
For the fifth year in a row, I'll be attending a Porcupine Tree concert in the fourth quarter. Their new album is due for release some time in September and they'll be playing Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam on October 12th. The anouncement mentions special guests, I wonder who that will be. I've read rumours of a bunch of bands, from Dream Theatre to Opeth. Guess we'll have to wait to find out.
I attended the Riverside show in Paradiso (Amsterdam) last night. You will soon be able to the entire show on Fabchannel.com. It was the third time I was able to attend one of their shows, so not too many surprises. Just a great, solid performance. They even played Rapid Eye Movement (from the bonus dics) which is such a great song!
Whilst queuing for my coat, I noticed The Sisters of Mercy will be playing Paradiso Feb 24th. I've had the pleasure of attending one of their shows in 2005 and would really like to attend this show. However that's the week I'll be returning from Riga.. so I think I'll have to skip it. Might keep it in mind though, in case I return home all energetic! :-)
I've always regretted not having seen Kyuss perform on stage. I'm making up for it though, having seen Queens Of The Stone Age in summer of 07 and then last night I got to see John Garcia and his friends at HermanoPatronaat in Haarlem. Due to parking difficulties we were a bit late, so missed opening act Troy Torino and found the band had just started as we entered. After inserting the earplugs we made our way forward. (By the way, why do most people always stick to a spot near the entrance. Move, people!)
I'm crap at remembering setlists, but they played a lot of my favourite songs. And boy how they played, very tight. Really great night. Shame they didn't have a t-shirt stand though, I would have liked to have bought one. Anyhow, check out some pictures in this set on Flickr or the video for My Boy.
Porcupine Tree played two consecutive shows in 013, I attended the last yesterday evening. Both will be used to create a new DVD. We found a great spot on the balcony from which to overlook the stage. In hindsight it would have been cool to attend both nights, but that would get a bit expensive. Also I feared, like Madrugada did last year and as is quite common especially with DVD recordings, that they'd play the same songs both nights. This turned out not to be true though. Ah well. I had a great night anyway!

I only just got back from my parents house, were I stayed after attending the Haggard show in Het Kasteel (Alphen aan den Rijn).
Since it's the annual celebration of the Spanish siege of Leiden (which took place in 1574) today, meaning public life pretty much comes to a halt for a few days, I was pleased to be able to leave the city this evening/night. There was no way I would have been able to make it back home anyway, the entire inner city is completely blocked off from transport for the funfair.
The show itself was great. In hindsight we could have arrived maybe an hour later though, the opening act wasn't that impressive. In between acts a curtain was closed and upon opening 12 members of the band appeared in the smoke. I've never seen a stage so crowded! I feared before hand they might play the new album, which seems to be en vogue these days. But thankfully they played a great mix of old and new.
This was also the first show wearing my new earplugs, which I can't recommend enough. Wish I'd bought these 10 years earlier! I attend quite a few shows a year and have noticed a trend of shows getting louder and louder. After the Monster Magnet show this summer I still had a ringing sensation after 2 days. That's not good. So I won't be attending any more gigs without these things.
Two reasons to be happy it's September: summer's pretty much over and it's time for the concert tours to come round this way. I've got some great shows lined-up already: Anathema and Demians in Tivoli Utrecht, Madrugada also in Tivoli Utrecht, Porcupine Tree in 013 Tilburg, Hermano in Patronaat Haarlem.
Shame all the tickets look the same these days, and don't get me started on the e-Tickets. What kind of memento is that?
Update: unfortunately the entire Madrugada tour has been cancelled, so I'll have to return those tickets. Some good news too: got Tickets for Haggard in Kasteel Alphen and Riverside in Paradiso Amsterdam.
Porcupine Tree will play 2 shows at 013, Tilburg, the Netherlands, on 15th and 16th October. The short run of European shows during October is in order to shoot a DVD based on the Fear of a Blank Planet album cycle, and the main body of the filming will take place at Tilburg, where the band will play as much different material as possible during the course of the 2 nights.
After a brief period of doubt (it'll be my 6th show of theirs in only 3 years), I will attend the show on October 16th.
I found out Norwegian band Madrugada were planning a few shows in our country some time in mid-March (a great birthday present for me). Because we couldn't really decide between the shows at Paradiso (Amsterdam) on May 2nd and Het Paard (Den Haag) on May 3rd, we decided to attend both. After all, it's not every day you get an opportunity to witness such a great band at work. Especially with all the rumours abound that this may be the tour for their last album under this name.
Concluding this fantastic end of year concert run was yesterdays Riversideshow in Zoetermeer. I'd seen them in the same venue last year after the release of their previous album. This tour was to promote the third and final part of their trilogy, Rapid Eye Movement. Went to the Amorphis show last night, they were playing Tivoli De Helling in Utrecht. We arrived just in time for the final song by opening act Insomnium. The interval gave us a good chance to find a proper spot more at the front. Up next some Finnish doom by Swallow the Sun, though I'm not that familiar with their work, I was quite impressed with their set. Then, finally, what I came for, Amorphis!
I was very impressed with singer Tomi Joutsen who only joined the band relatively recently. But he was great, a real personality on stage with his impressive dreads (real?) and he's got a great voice, going from grunts to clean vocals without any trouble. Even when the band played songs from the Tales From the Thousand Lakes album, released 10 years before Joutsen joined the band, it all seemed completely natural for him.

Strange how it's taken me until 2007 to see the entire triumvirate (ha, I've wanted to use that word for ages!) of Doom metal in the same year. First My Dying Bride in Paradiso in April, yesterday Paradise Lost in Tivoli and Anathema opening for Porcupine Tree later this year in December. So, Paradise Lost. I've been a fan since I've discovered Draconian Times and despite a few albums that didn't really do anything for me, I really feel they're back to they're old form since the release of 2005s self-titled album. So I was really looking forward to this show.
Didn't really see much of opener Neurosonic, but caught most of Waldemar Sorychta's Eyes of Eden. I wasn't really impressed with their performance, also because I wasn't familiar with the material. After their set, it was finally time for the main event. They played a nice mix of classics like one of my favourites "As I die" (the audience got to choose between Gothic" and "As I die"), "Enchantment" (from Draconian Times) and material from the new album. All in all a great night out!

Don't think I've ever seen Paradiso so packed as it was yesterday evening. We'd all gathered in Amsterdam to enjoy a show by Queens Of The Stone Age. Sold out in under 2 minutes, so expectations were running high.
Fortunately they did deliver, with an excellent set. The only downside was the volume level, it was just too damn loud, which caused quite a lot of resonance at times. Check out photo's of this event on Flickr.

Just got back from Amsterdam where we attended the Porcupine Tree at at Melkweg. The third time I've had the privilege of seeing them live in a little under two years. Last time was in September when they played a few songs which they were then still working on for the new album. This has since been released as Fear Of A Blank Planet. They played a great set with a bunch of songs from the back catalogue and of course ones from the new album. The one song I really missed though was Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, but you can't have everything you want now can you. :-)
Just got tickets for the My Dying Bride show in Paradiso on April 20th. The tour is for their recently released ninth album, A Line of Deathless Kings. I've seen them twice before, at the Graspop festival in 2000 and opening for Iron Maiden in 1995. So this will be the first time they'll actually be headlining. And in Paradiso. What a treat!
No much else going on today. Enjoying reading the A Song of Ice & Fire series. I'm trying to stop myself from finishing part 3, A Storm of Swords. After that, only part 4, A Feast for Crows, remains. Apparently the series is to end with 7 books, but the last three are unfortunately yet to be released.
Took 2 hours off from work this morning, so I could have some extra sleep. Didn't get home till about 2 last night, as I travelled all the way from 's-Hertogenbosch to see Iron Maiden play in the Brabanthallen.
Wasn't all that impressed with the venue. The entrance was one huge bottleneck which everyone had to pass through to get near the stage. This meant it took so long for us to actually reach a spot where the stage was visible, we completly missed opening act Trivium. I'm not all that familiar with their work, but was hoping to catch a part of their performance. Another thing I missed was something called airconditioning. But I shouldn't complain, it's Iron Maiden!
When I first heard about the plans to play the new album, A Matter Of Life And Death in its entirety, I wasn't really sure. But all in all it did work out better than I expected. The songs from the new album were followed by Fear Of The Dark, 2 Minutes To Midnight and Hallowed Be Thy Name respectively. The guys will be back in the summer to play a bunch of classics shows. Oh, and one thing that struck me, were have all the men with long hair gone?

It's really true, one does need more sleep as one gets older. Went to see Tool in Ahoy Rotterdam last night. The second show in this year. What a treat! :-)
I'm not really a big fan of Ahoy, the sound usually isn't very good. Luckily we had a great spot right in the center, so the sound was actually pretty good. A bit louder than I would have preferred though. My ears were ringing for quit some time after the show. And when will they ban smoking at gatherings like this? Such a disgusting habit.
Opener Mastodon didn't really impress. I'm not that familiar with their work, so everything sort of blended together. Also, the sound was way too loud for this one, so any detail that might have been there was lost on me. I wish I'd gotten earplugs about 30 shows ago.
Anyhow, on to the good stuff. The band played a little over 100 minutes. Afterwards, I heard rumors that the show might have been cancelled because Maynard was having problems with his voice. Glad they didn't, I'd been looking forward to it for ages. If he was having problems, I hadn't noticed. I was a bit dissapointed with the setlist, as I'd hoped they would play 10.000 days after not having played it in the HMH last time. But all in all definitely a great show. Also, they said they'd be back in the summer.

Just got back from Amsterdam, been to the Porcupine Tree show in Paradiso. Running a bit late, so we completely missed opening act Paatos. Did manage to find a nice spot and after a few minutes waiting the band appeared on stage. The first part of the show was a showcase of the material from the upcoming album. A lot of groovy, lengthy songs with heavy parts on one side, soft and fragile parts on the other. Some very moving moments there and definitely an appetizer for the upcoming album!
After a short break they played mostly new material, including my favourite song 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here', which was accompanied by some fitting video material. Other songs they played were: Open Car, Trains, Halo, Blackest Eyes. The band recently signed to Roadrunner Records and follow-up to the album Deadwing is due out early next year. Can't wait!

Though a bit on the short side, the Tool concert (my third) was fantastic! The show was accompanied by various footage (including the music videos for songs like Sober and Schism) on 4 big screens on stage. At the start we were asked to refrain from smoking on behalf of Maynard, which suited me just fine ast the smell of weed and tobacco is not one of my favourite things. Unfortunately there were still a number of people unable to comply with this request.
The sound / acoustics was very good, much better than I expected. And they even managed to create a semi-intimite atmosphere despite the size of the venue. Would have liked to have heard the 10,000 Days title track and maybe one of the olders song, like Sweat. Or maybe The Grudge. Oh, they have so many great songs, any setlist would be great. Also, Maynard mentioned that they'll be back in November for another show. :-) Rumors online are that that show will focus more on the new album and will take place in Ahoy Rotterdam.
Just got back from Katwijk where the Katatonia and Novembre concert took place. Though the sound could have been better, it was great seeing all my favourite Katatonia songs played live. I'd seen both bands opening for Opeth a few years ago, but that hadn't really stuck with me. Maybe because the last few Katatonia albums (released after that show) are my favourites of theirs. All in all a great night!
Went shopping in Haarlem yesterday, bought some nice things. Should have spared my feet though, because I had tickets for Riverside in Zoetermeer that very evening. But, despite the discomfort of sore feet, I must say it was a great show.
Riverside is a progressive metal band from Warsaw, Poland. They played songs from both their 2003 debut Out of Myself and 2005's release Second Life Syndrome. I remember reading somewhere these 2 albums are to be part of a trilogy, so I'm looking foward to the release of their third album.
I also bought a t-shirt with the Out of Myself cover on the front. Speaking of t-shirts, in front of us were 2 boys in hugely oversized Ghost Reveries t-shirts, who probably were newborns when Orchid came out. That makes me feel old.
Just got back from Tilburg, where, by way of celebrating Sinterklaas, we had a lovely meal in Grandcafé-Restaurant De Beurs and attended the Porcupine Tree concert in 013. The trip to Tilburg went quite smooth, also due to the assistance of the TomTom GPS system. I'd never seen it in action before, and am quite impressed. Though I'm sure there are people for whom this extra screen may end up being to much of a distraction. As I mentioned dinner was great, though maybe a bit rushed. But we wanted to be on time to find a nice place to stand.
Opening act was Oceansize. I'm not all that familiar with their work and after a while the set got a bit repetitive. After about an hour Porucpine Tree entered the stage. Though I'm not very good at remembering the setlist, I do remember they played the following: Blackest Eyes, Lazarus, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (both highlights), Start of Something Beautiful, Halo and encores Radioactive Toy and Trains. Come to think of it, the setlist mentioned in this review on Last.fm (in German) seems quite accurate. All-in-all an excellent performance and I'm quite sure I'll get the tour-DVD they're planning to release early next year.
Monster Magnet is one of a few bands I've wanted to see on stage, but never had a chance to before. Luckily for me they'll be playing Paradiso in March of the coming year. And I happen to have bought the tickets on Saturday!
The show is on the 16th, to be exact, which is also 2 days after my 27th birthday. Isn't that the age a whole bunch of rock stars didn't live beyond? Anyhow, I'm not a rock star, and pretty sure I won't be one before my 28th birthday. Enough with the gloom, first I have December to look forward to. Porcupine Tree will be playing 013 on December 4th. And ofcourse I'm going to see Opeth in Zoetermeer on the 22nd. :-D
Just got back from Tilburg, from the The Sisters Of Mercy show. Really didn't know what to expect beforehand, but it turned out to be a great show. Despite the fact that they kept us waiting for quite some time. The ticket said the show was due at 21:00, but they didn't start till around 22:10, after the smokemachine had been on for about fifteen minutes. But luckily that was all quickly forgotten once they started playing. I'd better get some sleep now, the trainride back home wore me out.

Despite the predicted heatwave we (and almost 50.000 other music fans) made the journey south to the city of Nijmegen for an entertaining day at Fields Of Rock.
We left Leiden at about 11:30. But since we were stuck in some major traffic, we arrived to late for Metal Church, who played at 13:00. We entered the field just as Motörhead was getting started. We traded money for tokens, got some drinks and enjoyed the music whilst sitting in the grass.
About an hour later (16:10) it was time for Slayer. They played a set of lovely classics. I was mostly shocked by the amount of grey in singer Tom Araya's beard. ;-)
Next up was Velvet Revolver, at which time we deemed it time for a meal.
I've taken today off work, and was hoping to be able to sleep in. But since the lingering smell of weed and beer in my hair drove me into the shower, I might aswell tell you about yesterdays trip to Paradiso where I saw Billy Corgan promote his new album, The Future Embrace.
We originally planned to go by train and tram, but the nice public transport people chose this day to go on strike. Luckily we still had the car available to transport us to our fine capital.
Opening act was a trio called Gliss, unknown to me, but sounded quite interesting. Certainly not the worst opening act I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. Billy, and the 3 musicians accompanying him (Matt Walker, Brian Liesegang and Linda Strawberry), played in front of a wall of tiles, which featured all kinds of images and colours. They played allmost exclusively songs from the new album, including the cover of the Bee Gees 'To Love Somebody'. One of the encore songs was a Ramones cover, but I'm unable to recall a title. As great as this show was, it does make me regret I never got a chance to see the Smashing Pumpkins perform live. But, all in all, a great night.
Just got back from Tilburg. Therion was excellent! Now I need to sleep. I'm getting to old for this type of thing. ;-)

Went to see Yes, in Ahoy Rotterdam, last night. I grew up with their albums and this was a line-up I couldn't refuse. I'd been once before, in 1990, I think. Quite strange to see the difference with the concerts I usually visit. Hardly any band t-shirts. People were actually drinking tea and coffee, instead of carrying beer trays. Not once did I smell any weed. Very weird. But good nonetheless. They're old, but they can still rock.
The concert was great! Opening act was Dutch band Autumn, which I did like. But because I didn't know the songs, they tended to blend into each other a bit. Then Anathema came on stage. They played a lot of the newer songs and ended with classic A Dying Wish, from my personal favourite album The Silent Enigma. Back at work. Trying to stay awake. Maybe a glass of water will help. [...] That's better. I wanted to post yesterday, but my dad's got a new computer and is having some problems with the ISDN card. So I couldn't get online all weekend. Well, not on sunday anyway. I didn't try on saturday, because that was Ozzfest day! No wonder I'm so tired. But damn, what a great festival. (Check out the complete bandlist at MetalfanNL.) We had sunshine all day, I even got sunburn, which has never happened on a festival before. Luckily I was prepaired for anything, with sunlotion, sunglasses, a sweater and my plastic rainponcho.
I also brought some food and a bottle of water, which was confiscated at the entrance. Which I don't understand, because I was allowed to keep my sunlotion. But okay. There were 10 of us and half went by car and the other half (including me) went by train to Nijmegen Central. From there we took the bus to the festivalterrain. Despite the extra busses, it was crowded with people in metal outfits. Not to mention the ever penetrating odor of beer, sweat and hasj.
The concert last night ruled. Big time. But I'm so very tired now. I must be getting old. Anyhow, I was surprised by the size of the venue. Baroeg is tiny. But that didn't matter. We came in halfway through the Novembre performance, but what I did hear sounded cool. By the way, you can download their stuff from MP3.com. Then there was Katatonia, who played an excellent set. Though I had hoped they'd play something of my favourite album "Dance of December Souls". But that's okay. They were ofcourse followed by Opeth. I have been a fan since ages and had, to my regret, never seen 'em live. Untill now. And they were great. The changes from fast to slow. Excellent! I can't think of a different word for it. And even though my feet hurt, my lowerback was aching and my head was throbbing, it all stopped when they played my favourite track, 'When', of my favourite album 'My Arms Your Hearse'. Yes, my friends, if you weren't there, you've missed a great gig.
